Scroll bar causing website to jump around

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

We have a website in production, and ran into - what happens when you center a website on a large screen and have a mix of pages with long and short content - and it almost caused me to punch the screen.   (noticed it most in Safari).

When moving from pages with short content to long content -  the browser renders the page THEN decides to add a scroll bar.  Thus causing the entire webpage to shift to the left to make room for the scroll bars!  UGH! It almost put me into a seizure.

Three hours of experimenting, searching,  frustration, and I finally found this solution:

Thank you for the most elegant solution I could find:

html { height: 100%; margin-bottom: 1px; }

This trick adds a tiny amount (1 pixel) forcing a scroll bar. So far, i have tested in FF, Chrome, Safari, & Opera, and IE.  Seems to work like a charm!

One line of CSS and problem solved.

Now, I need a new monitor.

Quran burning, Gainesville, FL and web design: intersection

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Those of us living and working in Gainesville, FL have had to put up with this knuckle head “preacher” for awhile now.

Yeah, you have the right to express yourself and so do I -here goes-”you, sir, are an idiot.”

1) You MESS with Gator Football.
2) You are just an idiot.

Now, we see how web designers and web developers have intersected with this idiot’s desire to burn Qurans.

This article describes the intersection between buring the Quran, Gainesville, FL and web design.

Interesting how those terms and agreements (and you KNOW you don’t read them either) reach up and bite you - especially when you are an idiot.

Here is to hoping that the UF Gator Football game is the biggest event in Gainesville this weekend.

Be safe.
